Dr. Giovanni Raffa is a Neurosurgeon at the University of Messina, Italy. His education took place mainly at the University of Messina, Italy, but also abroad being visiting student at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA , USA, and at the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati,OH, USA. He has been also visiting scientist at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Charité University Hospital, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany.
His main field of interest is Neuroncology, with a special attention to glioma surgery. He is an expert on advanced preoperative planning for surgery of gliomas in eloquent areas based on navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) and DTI fiber tracking. His main research field consists of the implementation of new nTMS-based DTI strategies to map cortico-subcortical networks involved in eloquent functions, including cognitive functions, prior of surgery in order to preserve them during tumor resection. This is witnessed by several papers published on international peer-reviewed journals and by several book chapters focusing on the field.
