Dr. Martin is a Research Scientist and Advanced Practice Psychologist at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. She is also an Associate Graduate Faculty member of the Criminology and Forensic Psychology Departments within the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at the University of Ontario Institute Of Technology in Oshawa, Ontario. As a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Dr. Martin maintains a private practice where she specializes in applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy for individuals who struggle with emotional regulation, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. She has trained police officers and other first responders about mental health and communication strategies for interacting with individuals who present with symptoms of mental illness. She undertook her PhD at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Martin uses her research as a form of advocacy of social justice issues for individuals involved in the criminal justice and mental health care systems. Her program of study is aimed at advancing the practice of psychology to effect system change and promote patients the opportunity for self-management. It is hoped that with greater understanding of the system and the patients within this system, that we can determine how best to empower patients to become active in their mental health and assist staff to intervene in effective ways to facilitate this process.
