Dr. Garner is the President and CEO of the River Centre Clinic in Sylvania Ohio, USA. Dr. Garner founded the River Centre Clinic in 1996 based on a unique and cost-effective treatment delivery system for eating disorders. Past academic appointments include Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology and Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto; Scholar of the Medical Research Council of Canada; Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Research for the Eating Disorder Program at Michigan State University; Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of Toledo and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Bowling Green State University. Dr. Garner has also developed the two most widely used psychometric instruments in the eating disorder field- the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-3) and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). In addition to developing clinical treatment programs, he has published more than 180 scientific articles and book chapters, and co-authored or co-edited 7 books on eating disorders. Over the past 30 years, he has given over 400 lectures or workshops on a range of topics related to eating disorders and obesity. He has been recognized by Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) as one of the most highly cited researchers in the social sciences.
Dr. Garner’s interests include a range of topics related to the understanding and treatment of eating disorders including diagnosis, pathogeneses, treatment options, complications and prevention. He is also interested in psychometrics of eating disorder measures.
