Dr. Kumar earned his Doctor of Medicine from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore (Manipal University) in India. He completed his Adult Psychiatry residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine – Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, New York. Thereafter, he completed a fellowship in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at RUTGERS Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He is triple-board certified by ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology) in General Psychiatry, Child/Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic psychiatry – which is a rare feat achieved by handful of psychiatrists in the country. Dr. Kumar is currently working as an Attending Psychiatrist in the CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatry Emergency Program) at St. Joseph Hospital, Syracuse, NY. He also works as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate University, Syracuse, NY – where he supervises & teaches medial students, psychiatric nurse practitioner students, residents and fellows. Prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, Dr. Kumar was working as a Psychiatrist providing outpatient adult and child/adolescent psychiatric services at Carthage Behavioral Health in Carthage, New York, and at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York. He has also worked as the Medical Director at Behavioral Health & Wellness Center (entity of Transitional Living Services) in Lowville, New York. Dr. Kumar developed the substance abuse guidelines for the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) - which are now being used as the University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) Guideline for Substance Use Disorder Treatment in all the prisons throughout the state of New Jersey.
His research projects have been published in various national and international journals. He further co-authored “Munchausen by Proxy: A Case Study of Abuse”, published in MedPage Today and “Munchausen by Proxy: DSM 5 changes and the impact of social media”, published by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL). Dr. Kumar’s areas of interest include child-forensics, psychopharmacology, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) & Autism. Dr. Kumar is a member of American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law; and is fluent in English, Hindi and Punjabi.
