Dr. T. Shantikumar Singh, presently working as Professor and Head of Department of Microbiology, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Sikkim, India acquired MBBS degree in1974 from Bhopal University, and M.D (Medical Microbiology) in 1981 from PGI, Chandigarh, India. He has about 40 years of experience in teaching and research in medical microbiology. His areas of interest are clinical microbiology in general and food borne parasitic diseases in particular. He has been the supervisor of students of M.Sc. (Medical Microbiology), M.D., M.S., and PhD. He has completed 14 research projects and published 70 research papers in National and International journals.
His pioneering research on Paragonimus and paragonimiasis in India has opened up new horizon in understanding the epidemiology, pathobiology, diagnosis and treatment of human paragonimiasis which was never considered a public health in India until 1982. His collaborative research with Japanese and Thai scientists in molecular characterization of Paragonimus species occurring in India have been rewarding. He co-authored a Chapter on Paragonimus: In Liu D, Editor. MOLECULAR DETECTION OF HUMAN PARASITIC PATHOGENS. New York: Taylor and Francis GGroup, CRC Press; 2012. He is the author of Medical Microbiology Manual and Practical Record Book for medical undergraduates. He has the experience of serving as editor of several professional journals. He is a life member of nine and fellow of three professional associations. He had attended 28 conferences (International and National) and 26 workshops and seminars of professional organizations and chaired in 8 scientific sessions. He had organized a dozen of Workshops and CMEs. He has received training in Medical Education Technology and is the Coordinator of Medical Education Unit in SMIMS. He is a recipient of the prestigious Dr. Kh. Jatishwar Singh Memorial Oration Award in XXVII AMAMECON in 2011, Manipur and Dr. J. Mahanta Oration Award in 2014 of Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology, India.
