Dr. Xu is the Executive Director of the Joint Laboratory of Biological Psychiatry, Shantou University Medical College (China)-Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba (Canada). He is also a faculty member at the Department of Anatomy of Shantou University Medical College. Dr. Xu was trained at the Hubei Medical College, which is now the College of Medicine, Wuhan University, China, first undertaking his Bachelor in Clinic Medicine, and subsequently his Master degree in Neuroanatomy. In 1996, he graduated from Peking Union Medical College and got his Ph. D. in Neuroscience. Then he moved to USA and worked at Medical College of Wisconsin as a post-doctoral research fellow. In the spring, 2000, Dr. Xu and his family immigrated to Canada and he worked at the Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, Department of Psychiatry, the University of Saskatchewan, as a post-doctoral research fellow and professional research associate in the order. In September, 2006, he moved back to USA and worked at the School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as a faculty member and principal investigator. As an educator, Dr. Xu has taught Human Anatomy, Regional Anatomy, Embryology, and Neuropharmacology for medical and graduate students in China, Canada, and USA.
His research areas include neurodevelopment, drug abuse, neuropsychopharmacology, and biological psychiatry and involve the applications of a number of techniques such as those of morphology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, behavioral neuroscience, pharmacology, and neuroimaging. Specifically, his research interests focus on antidepressants, antipsychotics, and animal models of schizophrenia and depression. Most recently, his specific interest has involved examining the role of oligodendrocyte dysfunction in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and evaluating the neuron-glia integrity in animals subjected to early life stress and in humans with mental disorders. Dr. Xu authored more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed English journals. He serves for more than 20 academic journals as a reviewer and is also on the editorial board for a number of journals.
