He is a senior biomedical scientist with 20 years experience working in public health and medical microbiology. He is a member of the Institute of Biomedical Science and a senior associate member of the Royal Medical Society. Many years of work with Public Health England specialising in gastrointestinal pathogens with extensive experience in antimicrobial resistance typing, whole genome sequencing, molecular methods of bacterial identification, serological typing, microbial physiology and biochemistry using a variety of typing platforms including VITEK, BIOLOG, MALDI-TOF, gel based and real time PCR. Particular emphasis on high containment Biosafety Level3/4 management and biorisk, laboratory management and compliance. After many years work in high containment with a particular interest in Salmonella paratyphoid species and managing a reference laboratory through organisational and structural change including the shift from traditional serological typing to WGS identification using sequencing to resolve antimicrobial resistance patterns. He is now work for the Scottish National Health Service managing compliance for the biggest combined specialty pathology laboratory in Europe. His responsibilities here are centred on compliance management to ISO 15189 standards, training, health and safety, NEBOSH Qualified, and laboratory IT.
The fields of biomedical science generally more specifically antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology, NGS, microbial physiology and biochemistry, novel pathogens and emerging infections and outbreak analysis.
