Miguel Bernardo is a Psychiatry specialist and was awarded a doctorate in Medicine by the University of Barcelona. He performs his medical activity at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, as Senior Consultant at the Psychiatry Service. He is the Director of the Barcelona Clinic Schizophrenia Unit. He is Full Professor of Psychiatry at Barcelona University and teaches third cycle at the doctoral programmes of Medicine and Biomedicine, credited with a quality award. He is credited as Cathedratic Professor by ANECA. He is the author of more than 270 scientific publications with an impact factor greater than 740 and index H of 30. He is the editor of the websites (http://www.forumclinic.org) and www.clozapinacomoopcion.es/ He is the leader of the Biological Bases of Psychiatric Disorders and Nuclear Psychiatry team at the Institut de Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (http://www.idibaps.org). He is the coordinator of the Schizophrenia Clínic Group, which is acknowledged as a Consolidated Research Group by the regional Government of Catalonia (Spain). He is the main investigator at G04 group in the Schizophrenia area of CIBERSAM (http://www.cibersam.es). He is a member of the Technical Committee for Mental Health Strategy of the Spanish National Health System and Advisor for the Director Plan for Mental Health of the Government of Catalonia, in Guidelines and Research. He is also an advisor at the Agencia Española del Medicamento y Productos Sanitarios (AEMPS), the European Medicines Agency (EMEA), the Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (FIS) and several Spanish and international research agencies. He is a member, advisor and evaluator at numerous editorial committees and frequent referee of the leading scientific journals of his specialty, both national and international. He has been granted awards from the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the Biomedic Investigation Award August Pi-Sunyer, the Award Best in Class to the best Unit of Schizophrenia in the National Health Service and the Research Award Pons Balmes 2016. He has been elected as an International Distinguished Fellowship by the American Psychiatric Association (2013). He is Ex-President of the Spanish Biological Psychiatry Society and President of Fundación Española de Psiquiatría y Salud Mental and honorary member of several scientific societies (Asociación Psiquiátrica de América Latina and Sociedad Española de Patología Dual) (2016).
His research line in Psychiatry is centred on schizophrenia, mainly on the following areas: Physical health; Neuroimaging, genetics and neurobiology, molecular psychiatry; Neuropsychology, psychoeducation and psychometric evaluation; Neuropsychopharmacology and High-risk population, early- onset and first and second episodes of psychosis.
