Dr. Aspelund is Assistant Professor of Surgery for Columbia University, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at Morgan Stanley Childrenís Hospital of New York-Presbyterian in New York, USA.
Dr. Aspelundís clinical practice involves patients with various neonatal and pediatric surgical conditions as well as prenatal consultation for congenital diaphragmatic hernia and other congenital chest and gastrointestinal anomalies. In addition, she manages a congenital diaphragmatic hernia multidisciplinary follow up clinic where she sees congenital diaphragmatic hernia patients in close collaboration with other specialists. Her research interests are in clinical outcomes including for congenital diaphragmatic hernia and appendicitis.
Dr. Aspelund is a native of Iceland and received her MD degree from University of Iceland Medical School. She then received her General Surgery training at Yale University School of Medicine/Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, USA, where she also completed a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship. She subsequently completed her fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. At Columbia University Dr. Aspelund has also acquired a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics/Patient Oriented Research from the Mailman School of Public Health.
