Gyorgy Balla was graduated at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen in 1977. After his specialization in pediatrics he became a neonatology fellow under the mentorship of professor Lajos Lakatos. Gyorgy Balla received a John E. Fogarty International Research Fellowship Award, NIH, USA, 1F05 TW 04106, 1988-1990, and later a Doctoral Fellowship Award, 1990-1992. During this time his mentor was professor Harry S. Jacob at the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA. For his outstanding research he got several awards. In the USA they were American Federation for Clinical Research Midwest Section Award for excellence in Hematology Research, USA 1991 and Cecil J. Watson Award for Outstanding Research in Clinical Medicine, University of Minnesota, USA. He discovered the role of heme-hem oxygenase-ferritin system in vascular diseases. At present he is the chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and the head of Division of Neonatology at the University of Debrecen, Hungary. He was elected the member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
