Dr. Karem Kolkailah started his distinguished career in the ophthalmology field in 1979 by performing cataract, glaucoma, squint and oculoplastic surgeries. In addition, he has mastered retinal surgeries since 1982. He is considered to be one of the MENA region's leading ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating keratoconus as well as performing corneal surgeries.
Dr. Kolkailah started performing refractive surgeries in the late 1980s and then LASIK surgeries a few years later. In fact, he was the first ophthalmologist to introduce excimer laser into the Egyptian universities, a significant feat at the time.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Kolkailah has moved between various Egyptian universities and research institutions where has held several prestigious titles such as Head of Ophthalmology Department in Suez Canal University and board member in the Egyptian Research Institute of Ophthalmology.
Apart from that, Dr. Kolkailah has been an integral member of various scientific associations throughout his career. He was president of the Egyptian Ophthalmological Society, one of the oldest establishments in the international ophthalmology field. Further, Dr. Kolkailah was also an advisory board member in the International Council of Ophthalmology as well as a member of the Global Members Committee of ARVO.
In addition to organizing and chairing many local and international conferences, Dr. Kolkailah has published over 80 research papers in the most renowned scientific journals in Egypt and abroad. Moreover, he has discussed and supervised over 350 Master’s and Doctoral theses in most Egyptian universities.
Since 2005, Dr. Kolkailah has been president of the Egyptian Eye Academy (EEA) which he co-founded with six of the country’s most prominent ophthalmologists. EEA was established with the aim of utilizing its staff’s collective expertise and outlaid investments to be the leading eye care hospital in Egypt and later on, in the MENA region.
