Dr. Louis J. (Lou) Catania is an internationally acclaimed clinical educator, author (11 textbooks and over 160 journal articles) and a recognized expert in corneal disorders, refractive surgery and new eye care technologies. He has practiced eye care for over 45 years as well as serving as the Chief of Eye Services for two large medical groups in Rochester, N.Y. and Philadelphia, PA. Currently, he is associated with Nicolitz Eye Consultants, a multispecialty ophthalmology group in Jacksonville, FL.
After graduating from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1969, he completed a 2-year residency in primary eye care and anterior segment disease with the University of Rochester, School of Medicine's Associated Hospital Residency Program where he also taught primary care optometric and medical interns and residents for 8 years. Dr. Catania still does clinical research and serves as an advisor to numerous eye care companies including Johnson & Johnson Vision Care and Marco Ophthalmic in Jacksonville, Florida. His clinical interests now include clinical research on numerous eye care technologies and developing innovative electronic devices for clinicians. He holds academic rank and is visiting faculty at numerous optometric and medical schools in the US and internationally and sits on 9 editorial boards.
Dr. Catania has been awards many honors including being voted one of the 10 most influential optometrists of the 20th century by the Review of Optometry Journal and 20/20 Magazine; received the Distinguished Service Awards from the Ocular Surface Society of AOA (2012) and the Optometric Glaucoma Society of AAO (2012); voted the first Pioneer in Optometry Award from Primary Care Optometry News (2015); one of 50 Most Influential Optometrists by Optometric Management Journal (2015); and inducted into the Optometry Hall of Fame (2016).
