Dr. Shrikant Gupte obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from Mumbai University, India. To date he has 45 years of experience in antibiotic research field. At the age of 62, he retired from Wockhardt Research Centre as Sr. Associate Director, Head-Microbiology after 12 years of service.
Earlier Dr. Gupte devoted 22 years for Drug Discovery Research, Hoechst, India where he obtained in depth knowledge and experience in isolation, purification, and identification of secondary metabolites from soil micro-organisms. Thereafter, he moved first to Ranbaxy Drug Discovery Research as a Senior Group Leader, Microbiology for 4 years and then to Wockhardt Drug Discovery Research, India. He evaluated several synthetic NCEs belonging to fluroquinolones, macrolides, oxazolidinones and others through in-vitro models such as MIC determination, MBC, Kill kinetics, PAE, protein binding, population analysis, mutant prevention concentration, in-vitro PK-PD models, anti-anaerobe activity and in-vivo mouse infection models of systemic, lung and thigh infection and several others such as in vivo PK-PD study. He made significant contribution to take forward Wockhardt’s developmental candidate WCK- 771 to phase I and phase II clinical stage. Dr Gupte has several patents and publications to his credit and had delivered many lectures on related topics to medical students.
Since last 5 years on retirement he had developed an indigenous technology, only 4th globally, to manufacture more than 100 MIC determination strips of various antimicrobial agents. His latest innovation is the first time development of pair of paper strips to detect MBL, ESBL and AmpC when co-exist in a single isolate. All these products are manufactured and marketed by Hi-media Laboratories, Mumbai, India under the brand name EZY MIC strips, for which he is a consultant.
