Prof. MICHELE VETRUGNO born in Bari on August 18, 1961, after his High School (Classical Studies) Diploma in 1980, enrolled in the “Università degli Studi” University of Bari, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. He got his degree during the 1986-87 Academic Year with full marks and honour, and a dissertation in Ophthalmology Clinics the title of which was “Visual evoked Potential and Oscillatory Potential in headache”. During his University years he won a scholarship from E.N.P.A.L.S. He got his diploma to practice the medical profession at the Università degli Studi in Bari in the April 1987. Session. He specialised in Ophthalmology in 1992 with full marks and honours and a dissertation entitled “Capsular cataract extraction with H.S.M. IOL implant in a hemo-dyalised patient”. On June 24, 1995 he got the the Diploma of the European Board of Ophthalmology in Milano. From 1984 to 1985 he attended the Istituto di Clinica Medica of the Bari University as Intern Pupil. Then he attended the Istituto di Clinica Oculistica of the Bari University: in 1986 as Intern Pupil in 1987 and 1988 as Internal Doctor. From 1991 to 1994 as C.N.R. investigator (bursar ex Art.36). On April 22, 1994 he won the Competition for a job of Technical Collaborator (7th professional level) at the Istituto di Clinica Oculistica of Università degli Studi, Bari; on may 2001 he won the competitive examination for a job of Researcher at the same Institute; on December 2002 he won the competitive examination for a job of Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the same Institute; additionally he was constantly working in the surgery room, out-patient and hospital departments. During the 1990-91 Academic year to now, he co-operated with his Teacher in lectures and practice with the students of the 5th course year, and with tutorial activity for dissertations for the Degree in Medicine and Surgery and for specialisation in Ophthalmology. During the 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 Academic Years he performed “Guided Tutorial Activity” for Ortoptist D.U. and Ophthalmology Assistant for the first, second and third course years. In the 1995-96 Academic Year he was assigned with Integrating Didactic Activities for the professional training of future Ophthalmology specialists. Additionally he performs an integrating didactic activity in the “Eye Surgery Course”, with monthly attendance, since the 1994-95 Academic Year. From 2002 till today he is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Glaucoma Research Center of Eye Clinic – University of Bari, Italy. . Member of the following Societies: International Society of Refractive Surgery Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology American Academy of Ophthalmology Società Italiana di Oftalmologia Società Oftalmologica Meridionale Associazione Italiana Studio Glaucoma Società Italiana Glaucoma Società Italiana Laser in Oftalmologia AWARDS Silver Medal “G. Favaloro”, 1992, awarded in Lecce during the works of the 26th S.O.M. Meeting. Merck Sharp and Dohme – Chilbret 1993 award, won in Cortina d’Ampezzo, during the works of the 9th S.I.L.O Congress. “A. Bonacorsi” 1995 Award, won in Cortina d’Ampezzo, during the works of the 29th S.I.L.O Congress. “Opticon 2000” 1996 Award, won in Cortina d’Ampezzo, during the works of the 12th S.I.L.O Congress. He is Author or Co-author of 200 publications, both in Italian and International Journals.
