Dr. Gorka obtained his first position at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) as an Assistant Professor in 2002, while he was still doing the thesis. A few years later, in 2011, he became Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the same University (UPV/EHU). His main research lines include the encapsulation of drugs, specially growth factors and other proteins of therapeutic interests, as well as the encapsulation of cells in three-dimensional polymeric structures. Gorka has also published several studies on biofunctionalization of implant surfaces to improve osseointegration. Dealing with this topic, it a recent paper published in Progress in Polymer Science (impact factor: 27) in which he and his collaborators review the state of the art of and main challenges of biomimetic implants to be used in osteointegration3. Important to highlight is Gorka’s ability to combine basic research with clinical research in a very elegant way. In fact, he is a co-author of 5 clinical trials in which different technologies in fields such as dentistry, traumatology, dermatology have been evaluated. Gorka contributed to the design of some of the studies, interpreted the data and drafted the manuscripts reporting the results 7-10. Moreover, he has greatly contributed to the development of patient´s own medications including natural biomaterials like fibrin and the release of proteins and growth factors. For example, he has more than nine years experience on the use of plasma proteins and the own patients´ platelets, therapies that have led to a number of applications in the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, dermatology and more recently a new personalized eye-drop for dry eye. All this activity has led to the publication of over 165 international scientific publications, 46 publications in national journals, 35 book chapters, 3 books as editor, 3 patents and his participation in more than 150 international conferences, many in which he has lectured or has been invited to a plenary session. He has currently a H-index of 32 (web of science) and 3422 citations. He is currently the youngest researcher in the field of Pharmacology and probably in any field in Spain having such a high H-index.
