Biography

Dr. Ahmad Shirafkan is Associate Professor of Cardiology and Director of the Cardiovascular Department at Golestan University of Medical Sciences. He attended Tehran University Faculty of Medicine in Tehran, Iran from 1973-1980. Subsequently, he completed his residency training in cardiovascular diseases at Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran. Afterwards he joined as a faculty member to Golestan University of Medical Sciences and focused on establishing the Cardiology Department for School of Medicine. In 2004 he completed a research fellowship in Echocardiography in University of Indiana School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN, USA with Dr. Feigenbaum. Again he attended a two-year Echocardiography fellowship training in Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran from 2010 to 2012. During this period he conducted several clinical studies and trained many qualified Medical Doctors. In addition to publication of scientific contributions and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, he serves as Editor Board of the Golestan School of Medicine journal. Since becoming a faculty member at Golestan University of Medical sciences he has been on staff at the Department of Cardiology at Gorgan Azar Medical Center. He has actively participated in the expansion of the clinical enterprise at Azar Medical Center, where he performs cardiac catheterization, echocardiography and follows patients on the inpatient services as well as in the General Cardiology, Heart Failure, and Cardiology Clinics. He mentored more than 20 medical students in conducting their thesis projects to achieve their MD degree. At present, he performs and supervises diagnostic cardiac catheterization and performs and reads advanced transthoracic, stress and transesophageal echocardiography studies as well as teaching medical students and internal medicine residents at Azar Medical Center.
