Dr. Kal Renganathan Sharma, Ph.D PE was born on October 8th 1963. He lost his maternal grand-father, K. Venkatasubramanian at age 1. At age 7 he was discovered as omniscient intelligent boy. At age 16 he received the once in school-time prize, Best All Round Student in the penultimate year at R. S. K. Higher Secondary School, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India in 1980. That year he got admission into Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India. At age 21 he graduated from IIT, Chennai with above average CGPA. He completed all his degree and research requirements for his Master’s degree in chemical engineering in 2 semesters at West Virignia University, Morgantown, WV. He studied PhD under Richard Turton who in turn was a Ph.D student of emeritus Professor Octave Levenspiel. He received M.S and Ph.D degrees in chemical engineering from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV. He completed his post-doctoral research training on microgravity transport phenomena under former chair and Prof. R. Shankar Subramanian at Clarkson University, Pottsdam, NY. One of the conference paper presented on Statisticial Design of Experiments during Scale-up Studies of Continuous Mass Polymerization process has been cited in Encylopedia of Polymer Science and Technology. During his 30 year research career he has discovered 9 dimensionless groups: (i) Frequency Number; (ii) Sharma Number (mass); (iii) Momentum Number; (iv) Sharma Number (heat); (v) Mixing Number (Initiation); (vi) Mixing Number (Propagation) and; (vii) Mixing Number (Termination); (vii) Capillary Gradient Number; (ix) Viscosity Gradient Number.
