Dr. Dorothy Chanda is a Senior Lecturer Head of the Department of Global/Public and Community Health Nursing at the School of Nursing Sciences of the University of Zambia where she is employed as a senior lecturer. She is a renowned Infection Prevention nurse-practitioner. She has devoted a major part of her professional career in the practice of infection prevention before joining the University of Zambia. Her passion for infection prevention has been demonstrated by the many presentations at International Conferences in Nigeria, USA, UK, Tanzania, and locally in Zambia. She prime-moved the infection prevention programme in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), Lusaka Trust Hospital, and the Kitwe Central Hospital, Ndola Central Hospital, Arthur Davison Children Hospital collectively known as the KANDO group of hospitals on the Copper belt province of Zambia. She is a member of the National Infection Prevention Working Group. She participated in the production of the National Infection Prevention policy and Guidelines. The Directorate of Clinical Care and Diagnostic Services of the Ministry of Health appointed her as a Master Trainer in Infection Prevention in which capacity she still continues to participate in capacity building of health care providers in infection prevention in all the provinces of Zambia. Currently, she is a member of the National Quality Assurance Committee of the Ministry of Health and has persuaded the committee to incorporate Infection prevention into its mandate. She is a member of the Peoples Health Movement (PHM, Zambia) and has represented the Orgnisation at its latest National Health Assembly and She holds a PhD in Publc Health from the University of Zambia. She also has excellent writing skills. She has authored two books, one in 2004 entitled Infection Prevention Practices in the Rural Communities and Health Care Institutions in Zambia published by Maiden Publishing House. This book was distributed to all health institutions in Zambia by the Norwegian Embassy; a second edition is in progress. The second book entitled ‘Nursing Management of Cholera Patients in Zambia’, was published in 2011 by the University of Zambia Press. This book was launched on the 28th of October by the current Honourable Minister of Health Dr. Chilufya Chitalu. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: This NGO Called Zambia Movement for Community Health Action, (ZAMCHA). has been registered under PACRA. I wish the NGO to collaborate with local, regional and International NGOs that share the same objective of improving community health by focusing on key populations’ major health threats and conducting Research on utilization of public health services in hardest-to reach rural geolocations The NGO also intends to construct ‘Mothers’ shelters with food banks at the health centers.
