Dr. Giovanni Raffa is a Neurosurgeon at the University of Messina, Italy. His education took place mainly at the University of Messina, Italy, but also abroad being visiting student at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA , USA, and at the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Cincinnati,Cincinnati,OH, USA. He has been also visiting scientist at the Department of Neurosurgery of the Charité University Hospital, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany in the period between 2014 and 2015. He obtained his Medical Doctor degree in the 2008 and his Neurosurgery Residency Diplom in the 2015 both at the University of Messina, Italy, with summa cum laude. He is actually spending his Ph.D. course on Biomedical, Clinical and Experimental Sciences at the University of Messina. Italy. He is member of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINCH) and of the European Associations of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS).
Dr. Giovanni Raffa's research intrests are Neuroncology, with a special attention to glioma surgery. He is an expert on advanced preoperative planning for surgery of gliomas in eloquent areas based on navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) and DTI fiber tracking. His main research field consists of the implementation of new nTMS-based DTI strategies to map cortico-subcortical networks involved in eloquent functions, including cognitive functions, prior of surgery in order to preserve them during tumor resection.
