Dr. Susi Burgalassi was born in 1962, she is married with two sons. She graduated in Pharmacy in 1987 at the faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa (Italy). She received her Ph.D. in “Design, development and bio-evaluation of drugs” in 1995 from the University of Pisa (Italy) by a thesis on "Mucoadhesive systems for controlled drug delivery for ophthalmic and buccal use”. She was Technician at the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry and Biopharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa (Italy) from 1999 to 2004: was Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the same Faculty from 2004 to 2014, when she became Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Pisa. Her teaching activities are in undergraduate course in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, and in post-graduate Master and PhD courses. The main research interests are in technological and biopharmaceutical field: ophthalmic drug delivery; mucoadhesion of ocular, buccal and vaginal formulations; cytotoxicity studies of drugs and pharmaceutical adjuvants on corneal and buccal epithelial cell cultures. Early, she worked as a collaborator of pharmaceutical companies, Inverni & Della Beffa (Milano, Italy); Glaxo (Verona, Italy); Farmigea (Pisa, Italy), and from 1997 to 1999 she was senior researcher of a European project (BMH4-97-2324) “Evaluation of oculotoxicity of drugs in vitro”. Her scientific and research activities were awarded with Actimex Awards (2002) and founded with PRIN 2002 and PRIN 2005: POR Marche (2008). She takes part in joint research projects with the Department of Ophthalmology and Toxicology of the Medical School of the University of Tampere (Finland) and the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics of the University of Malta, and in research projects founded by pharmaceutical companies. She is co-author of many research papers on refereed international journals, book chapters, patents and communications at national and international meetings. She serves as reviewer for several international scientific journals.
Dr. Susi Burgalassi research activity is aimed at studying various aspects involving topical pharmaceutical forms, both with local and systemic activity. Her research activity focused on the dosage forms with application to skin, nails and mucosa, with particular regard to ocular and buccal applications. The main aspects investigated were: the evaluation of the mucoadhesive properties of the mucosal formulations; the search for substances capable of modulating the repairing processes of mucous epithelial tissues, particularly of the cornea; the use of substances capable of increasing the bioavailability of drugs administered by topical formulations (permeation enhancing effect), both cutaneous and mucosal application; the study of the toxicity of the formulations.
