Dr. Boris I Gramatikov is a biomedical engineer with expertise in medical instrumentation, optoelectronics, computers, signal processing, mathematical modeling, lasers and biomedical optics. He graduated from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany, School of Technical and Biomedical Cybernetics, with concentration in Biomedical Engineering and Bionics and a major in Biomedical Engineering and Bionics. He joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Medical Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria. Duties included design of medical instrumentation, electronic hardware and software, and R&D. A significant part of his early career was related to signal processing of biomedical signals, mainly in the areas of electrocardiology, plethysmography, neurology, and ophthalmology. His Ph.D. thesis was on automated analysis of heart sounds, implemented in pediatric screening devices. He completed several research visits at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany, the Institute of Electronic Circuits, Genova, Italy, the Biomedical Engineering Department of Johns Hopkins University, and others. In 1996 he joined the Biomedical Engineering Department of Johns Hopkins, where his research efforts focused on the detection of cardiac ischemia using advanced signal processing methods applied to the analysis of the morphology of the QRS in the EKG. In 2000 he joined the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at the Wilmer Eye Institute, to participate in the development of a Pediatric Vision Screener for detecting risk factors for amblyopia (“Lazy Eye”), and to participate in a series of vision-related research, such as ability to fixate in normal and ADHD subjects, attention attraction, and others. In 2009 he received the The Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Award for work on the Pediatric Vision Screening Instrument for Early Detection of Amblyopia. A volunteer with the Baltimore Section of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), currently holding the position of Director for Continuing Education. Dr. Gramatikov is the first inventor on U.S. Patents No. 8,678,592 B2 and No. 9,737,209 B2.
His Research Interest are in retinal birefringence scanning, detecting eye alignment and eye tracking (using information obtained directly from the fovea), automated focus detection, studying fixation stability, and related fields of ophthalmology, especially pediatric ophthalmology. Detection of central fixation is important for early identification of amblyopia and strabismus. The main goal is to identify and treat children with strabismus (misaligned eyes) or anisometropia (unequal refractive error) before irreversible amblyopia (functional monocular blindness) results. Dr. Gramatikov is also working on combining retinal birefringence scanning (RBS) with optical coherence tomography (OCT). This is collaboration project between Johns Hopkins and Duke University, sponsored by The Hartwell Foundation. The goal is to further improve these two technologies and join them with the aim of enhancing the ability to determine levels of retinal disease in infants and children, and to better identify likelihood of disease progression. Other research efforts are related to treatment of amblyopia with advanced methods, including LCD shutter glasses, novel methods for attention attraction, as well as using eye tracking and the ability to fixate for identification of subjects with ADHD, the application of artificial neural networks and statistical methods to precise diagnostic classification, real-time computing, signal processing (such as time-frequency distributions, coherence, and fast autoregressive spectral estimation) with applications to optical signal processing, feature extraction and others. Dr. Gramatikov has published numerous papers in the areas mentioned above.
