Biography

I am a PhD in COPD, Respiratory Medicine. I obtained the certificate in Medicine, Ptychio Iatrikes (MB BS equivalent) in 1995 from the National University of Athens, Greece and then I went to UK as a Senior House Officer in Geriatric, Renal, Respiratory Medicine, Intensive Care and Anaesthetics. I obtained MRCP PART I in 1998 and MRCP part II in 1999. I worked for a year as a locum Registrar in UK, appointment approved by the Joint Committee on Higher Medical Training and then as Registrar in Respiratory Medicine at Sotiria Chest Diseases Hospital, Athens. I obtained the certificate of specialty in Respiratory Medicine in 2003 and the certificate of specialty in Intensive Care Unit in 2006 after working as a Registrar in Intensive Care at Ippokratio Hospital Athens for two years. In 2008, I obtained my PhD in COPD, the thesis title was: Sputum flora in COPD exacerbations and sensitivity of pathogens to broad spectrum antibiotics. Since 2009, I have worked as an Intensivist initially at Evgenidion Hospital and currently in ICU at Saint Savvas hospital in Athens. I have mainly investigated the microbiology of sputum in COPD patients and correlated the presence of positive cultures with indices of severity of disease and evaluated factors predicting their long term outcome. With our colleagues we have also examined the clinical predictors for presence of Pulmonary embolism and the effectiveness of intrathecal antibiotics in neurosurgical ICU patients. I participated as a researcher to protocol (SCO 30003) of GlaxoSmithKline company and to protocol (205.372) of Boehringer Ingelheim company. My work was published on the Journals: Respirogy, J Gen Intern Med ( Respirology, J Thromb Res,Resp Med CME, J. Med Case Reports, Am J Med Sci, International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents.
