Cathal Mc Carthy has recently returned to the job market in Ireland after completing a B.Sc in Marine Biology at GMIT Galway and travelling in the USA. Previous to this he enjoyed a long and successful career in the printing industry. This was for many years in his profession and during that time he worked with a number of companies including Smurfit Ireland who are responsible for the printing of most national newspapers in Ireland. He reached the top of his field and won several prestigious awards. To further his career he moved to the USA and worked with The Irish Emigrant amongst others. He enjoyed his time abroad and held various senior positions working as a team leader and in an individual capacity. He then decided to take up a new challenge and returned to higher education in GMIT, Galway. He thoroughly enjoyed this time and felt an affinity within his field of study. Over the course of his studies he completed 3 periods of work experience on the Celtic Voyager. While working on the boat he completed numerous experiments and research. These included a project on sediments from ocean floor and tests regarding the penetration of the sun to the sea bed. He worked as a team but also had individual tasks and responsibilities.
As part of his work placement during his degree, he worked at Galway Atlantaquarium. His responsibilities varied here from dealing with marine life to assisting customers. During this time he was also heavily involved in the reconstruction and full renovation of a Galway Hooker boat (Gleoiteog). He worked on this project from its inception to its conclusion and participated in every aspect of said project.
