Dr. Tarun Kumar is currently working in the CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatry Emergency Program) at St. Joseph Hospital, Syracuse, NY as an Attending Psychiatrist. He also supervises & teaches medical students, psychiatric nurse practitioner students, residents and fellows in his role as the Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate University, Syracuse, NY. Dr. Kumar has worked as a Psychiatrist providing outpatient adult and child/adolescent psychiatric services at Carthage Behavioral Health in Carthage, New York, and at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York in the past. He has also worked as the Medical Director at Behavioral Health & Wellness Center (entity of Transitional Living Services) in Lowville, New York. Dr. Kumar has a stellar educational background. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Manipal University (Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore) in India, and later completed his Adult Psychiatry residency at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine – Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, New York. Dr. Kumar also completed a fellowship in Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and then another fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at RUTGERS Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. Dr. Kumar is one of the few psychiatrists in the country – who is triple-board certified by ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology) in General Psychiatry, Child/Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic psychiatry. Dr. Kumar is also a member of American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
Dr. Tarun Kumar has contributed significantly to the research field. He is currently serving on the editorial board of various reputed journals, and his own research projects have been published in various national and international journals over the years. Dr. Kumar further developed the substance abuse guidelines for the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) - which are now being used as the University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) Guideline for Substance Use Disorder Treatment in all the prisons throughout the state of New Jersey. His areas of interest include psychopharmacology, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), Autism, and psychiatry & law.
